Discord accepts Unicode characters almost everywhere, so you can give yourself a styled display name, a fancy server nickname or a decorated status without any bot or Nitro. Type your text above, copy the style you want, and paste it into Discord.
Read this before you copy: Discord has two different systems
Most guides skip this and it is the single thing worth knowing. Discord already has real formatting for messages, and it is better than Unicode for that job:

Which styles are safest on Discord
Bold, Italic, Sans bold and Monospace come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric block, which every modern device ships. These are the reliable choices for a display name you want everyone to read.
Script, Fraktur and Double-struck are almost as well supported and are what most people mean by a fancy Discord name. A handful of letters in these three do not exist in Unicode and are quietly borrowed from another block — see our font generator for the full gap list.
Circled, Fullwidth and Upside down are the most likely to look wrong on someone else’s device. Fullwidth in particular doubles the width of every character, which will get your nickname truncated in the member list.
Frequently asked questions
Will a styled name get me banned?
No. These are ordinary Unicode characters and Discord permits them in display names. What can happen is a server rule against unreadable names, or a moderation bot that renames people whose nickname cannot be typed or mentioned easily.
Can people still mention me?
Yes. Mentions use your username, not your display name, so a styled display name never breaks pings. This is exactly why Discord restricts the username field.
Why did some letters stay normal?
Because that character does not exist in that Unicode alphabet. Numbers are the usual culprit — several styles have no digits at all, so a name with a number in it comes out uneven.
Does this need Nitro?
No. Nitro changes what emoji and avatars you can use. Text characters are free for everyone.
Will it work on mobile?
Yes, the Discord mobile app renders the same characters. Pasting into the mobile app is the awkward part, so most people set their name from the desktop app or the browser.
Setting a styled name, step by step
Discord has three separate name fields and people mix them up constantly. In order of how often you will want them:
- Display name — the name shown everywhere by default. User Settings, then Profiles, then Display Name. Paste a styled version here and it follows you across every server.
- Server nickname — overrides your display name in one server only. Right-click your name in the member list, then Edit Server Profile. Useful when one community wants readable names and another does not care.
- Username — your @handle. This one rejects styling by design, and no generator will change that.
On mobile the same fields exist under your avatar, but pasting is fiddly. Most people set the name once from the desktop app and never touch it again.
Why your styled name might get changed back
Two things do this, and neither is Discord itself. Larger servers often run a moderation bot that renames anyone whose nickname cannot be typed or read — some enforce a plain first character, others reject non-Latin characters outright. Second, a server may have a naming rule in its rules channel that a human moderator enforces. If your name keeps reverting, that is the cause, and a lighter style such as Bold or Small caps usually passes where Fullwidth or Circled does not.
